Council housing - squatters and unauthorised occupants: Outline

Rossendale Borough Council transferred its housing stock in April 2006. These properties are now owned by Green Vale Homes. Empty properties owned by Green Vale Homes are usually awaiting repair, redecoration or re-letting and Green Vale Homes are keen to ensure that they are returned to use as soon as possible so that someone on the waiting list has the opportunity to find a home.

The laws on squatting are quite complex and Green Vale Homes  cannot simply evict a person who is squatting. However, if any tenant becomes aware of squatters in a property that they know should be vacant - perhaps one tenant has moved out and another has not yet moved in - we would be grateful if the tenant would advise us and we can then commence action. This applies generally to unknown and suspicious occupants. Green Vale Homes cannot know what is happening in all the properties that it owns and they would greatly appreciate the information received from our tenants.

If you see anyone suspicious or who appears to be squatting in a property please use the contact details below so that we can resolve the matter quickly. Any contact will be strictly confidential.
