Housing benefit appeals: Outline

Anyone who has claimed Housing Benefit and disagrees with the decision made in their assessment can challenge a decision. They can also appeal against the Council's decision to an independent appeal tribunal.

If you think the decision is wrong, you can ask us to explain it. If you still think it's wrong after we have explained it to you, you can ask us to reconsider it. You will need to do this, in writing.

You can appeal to an independent tribunal who can change the decision if they agree that it is wrong. The tribunal is administered by the appeals service. There is a time limit of one calendar month from the date of the decision, to ask for decisions to be looked at again and for appealing
