Keeping your baby safe
Safer Sleep For Baby
Every Baby Matters in Rossendale
In East Lancashire the number of babies who die before their first birthday is higher than the national average and we want this to change and become less.
No-one wants to think that the worst will happen to their baby but it's important that parents and carers know the risks and what they can do about them.
Do you know your 6 steps?
Advice for parents and families
Safer sleep for baby focuses on 6 easy to follow steps which parents or carers can follow any time you put your baby down to sleep.
- Keep baby away from smoke, before and after birth.
- Put baby in a cot, crib or moses basket to sleep - never fall asleep with them on a sofa or chair.
- Never fall asleep with baby after drinking or taking drugs/medication.
- Put baby to sleep on their back with their feet to the foot of the cot.
- Keep baby's head and face uncovered and make sure they don't get too hot.
- Breastfeed your baby - support is available if you need it.
Sleeping away from home?
If you're baby is going to be sleeping somewhere different for the first time, whether this is on holiday or at a baby sitters, it's important that whoever is looking after them follows the safer sleep advice.
Before you go away there are a few extra things you should think about. See how you can get prepared.
Check the room temperature which should be 16-20°C - ask your Health Visitor for a thermometer
Keep your home Smoke Free and don't let others smoke near your baby - see below for smoke free homes
Get your baby fully immunised
Register with your local Children's Centre, they have lots to offer
Try not to worry, contact you Health Visitor or Midwife for reassurance
If you are pregnant contact your Midwife early so that you and your unborn baby receive all the care you can
