Payment of council tax is due on demand on the 1st April each year, but councils are obliged to offer a statutory instalment plan (maximum 12 instalments) to customers.

  • Your statutory instalments are shown on the lower half your council tax bill. The preferred methods of payment are listed on the reverse of the bill.
  • If you have already opted to pay by direct debit, this will be indicated on the front of the bill alongside the instalment amounts. 14 days notice will be given of any amended instalments
  • All default instalments are due on the 1st of each month (you can choose to pay on 1st, 8th, 15th or 22nd)
    • Please note: in some cases, such as standing order, internet & telephone banking, the payments can take up to 10 days to clear, therefore please take this into account & make payments in advance, to ensure they reach your council tax account by the 1st.
  • The Council is legally obliged to collect council tax in accordance with legislation and therefore is unable to offer any other instalments other than those outlined on your bill. The only time any other legal arrangement can be made, is after the issue of a summons/liability order.
  • If you cannot afford the statutory instalments, you should pay as much as you can possibly afford to reduce the debt outstanding, however the council cannot guarantee that you will be excluded from reminder & subsequently summons action, the cost of which will be passed onto you.

If you are on a low income and you think that you may be entitled to benefits you should contact the benefits section immediately as any delay can affect your claim.

Weekly payment of council tax. You can pay your council tax weekly provided payments are made by the due dates.

  • For example if your instalments are £80.00 per month you must ensure that £80.00 is paid by the 1st of the month
    • For example paying £20.00 per week starting on 1st April would not clear your first instalment by the due date and reminder notices would be issued -- you would need to start paying towards your 1st April instalment from early March

Yearly & half-yearly payment

  • If you wish to pay your council tax in full you may do so but payment must be made by the first instalment date - you cannot withhold payment until the end of the payment period. There are currently no discounts available for customers who pay their council tax in full.
  • If you wish to pay half yearly you must make your first payment (the equivalent of the first 5 instalments) by 1st April and the second payment by 1st September
  • A council tax bill will not be issued with these payment options ALL bills show monthly instalments.

If instalments are not paid in accordance with the bill, then you may lose the right to pay by instalments.

Reminder notices are sent monthly shortly after the 1st of each month requesting overdue payments.

A maximum of 2 reminders for any current account will be issued in any one financial year, on the 3rd occasion an instalment payment is late a final notice will be sent.

A final notice indicates the right to pay by instalments has been withdrawn and the whole amount outstanding for the remainder of the financial year is now due & payable.
