NHS East Lancashire

Help us save a million years of life

NHS East Lancashire Primary Care Trust (PCT) established on 1st October 2006, serves the residents of the 5 boroughs of Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, Ribble Valley and Rossendale - which is a population of 386,000 in total. Some people in England experience poorer health due to less income, poor housing and lower educational attainment.  In light of this the PCT has an ambition of Saving a Million Years of Life (SMYL) by the end of 2011. SMYL looks for focused, measurable change in a number of areas which are:

  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Infant Mortality
  • Alcohol
  • Drugs
  • Tobacco
  • Geographical Inequalities

To achieve success the PCT has to work with many partner organisations from the statutory and voluntary sectors.

Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS)

The Patient Advice and Liaison Service, known as PALS, has been introduced to ensure that the NHS listens to patients, their relatives, carers and friends, and answers their questions and resolves their concerns as quickly as possible. PALS also help the NHS to improve services by listening to what matters to patients and their loved ones and making changes, when appropriate.

In particular, PALS will:

  • Provide you with information about the NHS and help you with any other health-related enquiry
  • Help resolve concerns or problems when you are using the NHS
  • Provide information about the NHS complaints procedure and how to get independent help if you decide you may want to make a complaint
  • Inform you about how you can get more involved in your own healthcare and the NHS locally
  • Improve the NHS by listening to your concerns, suggestions and experiences and ensuring that people who design and manage services are aware of the issues you raise

Just Go

Most people at some point feel unwell because they're stressed or anxious and feel alone with their worries.  Enjoying social activities can make you feel more positive and become less isolated.  Social Prescribing is simply a method of signposting to non-medical services that are based in the local community and easily accessible.

Rossendale Enterprise Anchor Limited (REAL) have worked with community groups and organisations to fill the Just Go website with a huge directory of information on leisure / sports / hobbies / health / clubs and services that are available in Rossendale for families, young people, older people, the disadvantaged, the unwell and the well (in fact something for everyone!)
