Core functions

The EWS functions in the following areas:

  • To respond to notification from schools of pupils whose attendance gives cause for concern, to investigate underlying reasons, and to assess how to improve attendance
  • To respond to notification from schools of pupils who give cause for concern on issues affecting attendance and attainment, e.g. bullying, neglect, medical conditions, financial problems
  • To offer support and advice on good policy and practice in schools relating to registration and attendance and to child protection issues
  • To challenge and inspect policy and practice in schools relating to registration and attendance and to child protection issues
  • To initiate and process legal action against parents who fail to ensure the regular attendance of their children at school or otherwise
  • To offer support and advice to parents and pupils on issues affecting attendance and their best use of the educational opportunities available to them
  • To investigate "missing" pupils and pupils thought to have left the area
  • To attend strategy meetings, initial/review child protection conferences, family support meetings and related core groups
  • To ensure appropriate training and development for LEA staff and schools in child protection and attendance issues
  • To participate in cross-cutting welfare initiatives in line with the Service's strategic objectives
  • To contact the parents of excluded pupils as required to ensure due process and awareness of their related rights and responsibilities
  • To license children and young people for employment, entertainment and modeling/sporting activities, and to follow up any related irregularities
  • To signpost queries and complaints from parents and other members of the public on education-related issues.
