Bacup Carnival

Published Sunday 20th December 09

CARNIVAL organisers have nearly reached their fund-raising goal of £5,000 to bring back a traditional family fun day that has been absent from Bacup for nearly six years.

The last Bacup Carnival was on Sunday 27 June 2004 and, by coincidence, the same date Sunday 27 June will be the date of the revived carnival in 2010.

Chairman of Bacup And Stacksteads Carnival Organisation, David Morris said: "We are working hard to ensure our plans are a great success and we are very pleased with the support we have had so far.

"We have organised a host of different events including pub charity nights and a bath of beans to raise the money needed to put on the carnival and have had support through grants from Rossendale Council, County Councillor Jimmy Eaton and Lancashire County Council.

"We already have lots of people completing forms asking to get involved in the parade which will tour the town centre and hopefully finish at Stubbylee Park where we hope to have a fair with stalls, rides, attractions and displays.

"We have had quite a bit of interest from people and we have our first float and hope to have several more. We want to capture the spirit that used to exist.

"By ensuing that the event is kept strictly alcohol-free, I am sure that we will have a fantastic family fun day for all.

"We need people to volunteer as marshals and anyone wanting to offer help, or get involved can email info@basco.org.uk or call in at Stacksteads Post Office and collect a form."
