The Mayor of Whitworth

Councillor David Chorlton

Mayor and MayoressThe current Mayor of Whitworth is Councillor Mr David Chorlton, and his Mayoress is his wife, Mrs Gillian Chorlton.

Councillor Chorlton will serve as Mayor for a year, until May 2011, when a new Mayor will be elected. During his period in office, the Mayor will attend and host countless functions and events, promoting Whitworth generally and the Council specifically, and helping to raise money towards his chosen charities - funds from this year's Mayor's Charity Fund will be disseminated to worthy Whitworth causes.  The Mayor also presides over Full Meetings of the Council.

The Deputy Mayor (or Mayor in Waiting, who is often - but shouldn't be - confused with the Mayoress or Consort!) is Councillor Dave Bradbury. Councillor Bradbury presides over meetings of the Council's General Purposes Committee.

Our Mayor, Councillor David Chorlton, says:

"Although I am originally from Prestwich, I can't see myself living anywhere else but Whitworth in the future. I first came to Whitworth in February 1989 and started working at UBS in Facit - many of you will know me as 'Dave from UBS'! It was here that I met my wife Gill and in 2005, after working in other showrooms for 6 years, we bought the business, which is now a busy bathroom showroom and DIY builders' merchant. Gill and I have a very busy family life, with 6 children, 2 grandchildren, and Brian [father-in-law!]. In addition to her family commitments, Gill is a registered childminder and also volunteers with the local Beavers and Scouts.

June 2010 marks the start of my fourth thoroughly enjoyable year as a Whitworth Town Councillor. In addition to my standard Town Councillor duties, I also chair the Council's Tourism and Leisure Committee, which organises an array of events and tourism initiatives throughout the year (you can find details of a number of them in this magazine!). I'm extremely proud to be a Town Councillor, and fiercely proud of the Town Council's achievements in recent years. I would like to thank the people of Whitworth for the ongoing support of the Town Council, and ask that you keep in touch with your elected members so that we can represent your views and needs.

During my year in office Gill and I will not be supporting a specific cause, but instead will be looking to raise funds for the Whitworth community in general. We have already started working with the schools and playgroup in Whitworth to raise fund, and on 19 June myself and 20 other Whitworth residents will be attempting to walk the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge - a gruelling 24-mile hike - in under 12 hours. And, as he knows I always like a challenge, Jo Furtado has challenged me to join the children from the High School in this year's Moorathon. We will also be holding a fundraising Summer Ball on 26 June at the Riverside. Tickets are now available, and I hope you'll be able to join us - contact our Town Clerk for more information.

Gill and I are very much looking forward to the next twelve months, getting to know the people of Whitworth, and representing our wonderful town at events further afield. I will also make every effort support any local events - please contact the Town Clerk for more details."
