Zoo licence

A ‘zoo’ is classed as any establishment, other than a circus or pet shop, where animals are kept for public exhibition. These businesses cannot operate without a licence.

It costs £358.20 plus vet fees for a new zoo licence, which is renewed annually

In addition to annual inspections by Public Protection, periodic inspections must also be carried out by an inspector appointed by the Secretary of State and are charged to the applicant as an additional fee.

Before applying for any animal welfare licences you should discuss your business proposal with Public Protection first. If your application is for a new or purpose-built premises, you’ll also need planning permission before your application can be considered.
