Rossendale’s new Mayor and Deputy Mayor installed at Annual Meeting

Rossendale Borough Council has announced the installation of Councillor Michelle Smith as the Mayor of Rossendale for 2025/26, following her nomination at the Council’s recent Annual Meeting. Councillor Smith will be accompanied in her civic duties throughout the year by her Mayoress, Jackie Oakes.

Speaking on her appointment, Councillor Smith said: “I am honoured to be appointed Mayor of Rossendale 2025/26, and I am very much looking forward to the year ahead.

“It will be a chance to meet lots of people, groups, and charities who are working hard to make Rossendale a great place to live and work. As part of my role, I will be raising funds for my chosen charities; Carers Link, Bacup Pride, and Kids in Rossendale, which will help to support the fantastic work they all do in the Valley.

“I am also keen to represent Rossendale throughout Lancashire as I meet Mayors, dignitaries and groups from around the County, to share details of our amazing Borough.”

Councillor Smith brings with her a decade of experience as a Rossendale Borough Councillor, having previously served as Deputy Leader, a Cabinet Member, and Chair of the Audit & Accounts Committee.

She succeeds Councillor Judith Driver, who has completed an outstanding term as Mayor. During her time in office, Councillor Driver undertook over 175 engagements, raised over £8,000 for local charities, and represented Rossendale at key events, including the D-Day commemorations and the Bocholt Delegation visit to Germany.

Reflecting on her year in office, Councillor Judith Driver said: “I have had an amazing year meeting lots of new people from all over Lancashire, and it has been wonderful to be able to promote Rosendale and all we have to offer. It will be an experience that myself and Ian will never forget.”

Also appointed during the meeting was Councillor Liz McInnes, who will serve as Deputy Mayor for 2025/26 for civic engagements. Councillor McInnes will continue in her role as a member of Cabinet and Portfolio Holder for Communities, Housing, Health & Wellbeing and will support Councillor Smith during her mayoral year.

A short silence was also held at the start of the meeting for Former Councillor Mike Royds who sadly passed away recently.
