Leader of the Council, Alyson Barnes, monthly update for May 2025
As we head into the bank holiday weekend and the school half-term break, many of us will be making the most of the good weather and heading out to enjoy the stunning countryside around Rossendale. If you’re walking the moorlands, cycling the trails, or just taking in the fresh air, I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to be extra vigilant when out and about. It’s been an unusually dry start to the year, and we’ve already seen several wildfires in the area, far more than we’d expect at this point in the season. The ground is extremely dry, and the risk of fire is very real. Even small acts like a discarded cigarette, a barbeque, or a glass bottle left behind can have serious consequences.
We all have a responsibility to take care of the land around us, not just for ourselves but for the wildlife and for future visitors. Alongside the fire risk, it’s worth mentioning that this prolonged dry spell also puts pressure on our water supply, so I’d encourage everyone to be mindful of how and when they’re using water as the hot weather continues.
Living in Rossendale, we’re fortunate to be surrounded by such beautiful countryside, and it’s easy to take that for granted. But maintaining and protecting our environment requires constant care and attention and that includes respecting fire safety guidance, taking litter home, and staying alert to anything that might put others at risk. If you do see something concerning, please report it. Safety whether it’s your own or someone else’s should always be front of mind.
Earlier this month we had our local elections, and I want to thank everyone who took the time to vote. Turnout matters. Even if the outcome wasn’t what I personally would have hoped for, I respect the result and the process - that’s democracy. I’d also like to congratulate Samara Barnes who retained her Haslingden seat. As many of you know Samara, as well as being a county councillor is also a borough councillor, and she works tirelessly for her residents – well done Samara.
Reform now has overall control of the County Council, having campaigned heavily on issues like road repairs and tackling the pothole problem, something we in Rossendale are all too familiar with. It’s only fair, then, especially given the millions government have put into pothole repair that we expect to see real progress on this front. I’ll be working closely with my colleagues at LCC to make sure Rossendale ’s voice is heard and that we receive our fair share of investment in our roads and infrastructure.
Lastly, I’d like to take a moment to warmly welcome our new Mayor, Cllr Michelle Smith. Michelle brings real energy and commitment to the role, and I have no doubt she’ll serve our community with the same dedication she’s shown throughout her time as a councillor. I wish her every success in the year ahead.
