A new initiative under the Haslingden Big Lamp project is encouraging families and young people to explore Haslingden’s rich history

Developed by The Whitaker Museum, the ‘Museum on the Move’ heritage trail allows people to interactively explore the history and architecture of local buildings and businesses, including Unscripted, Ninja Coffee, Imran’s Impressions, Be You Lifestyle Boutique, David Gould Opticians, Hazelwood Homecare, and Beautylicious.

The trail begins at Haslingden Library, where participants can collect a map and explore The Whitaker’s exhibition of historical objects relating to local businesses. Each stop has a window display with a QR code linking to detailed blogs and artwork developed by volunteers and local artist Andy Marshall, whose drawings bring the buildings to life.

The trail runs alongside the ‘Haslingden Sketching Tour’, which provides primary and secondary school children with the opportunity to sketch the town’s overlooked features and objects on display from The Whitaker’s collection. The tour’s drawings, photos, and reflections will be compiled into a community heritage education pack that will be shared with schools across Rossendale to encourage more people to get involved in local heritage activities.

Usma Rehman from The Commercial Hotel said: “It’s fantastic to see a project that not only celebrates Haslingden’s heritage but also makes it understandable and relatable for kids. Through creative learning, local pride, and cross-generational storytelling, this project brings our community together in a really powerful way.”

Made possible through funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Rossendale Borough Council, the heritage trail will remain open to the public until Sunday 14th September 2025. Following this, a dedicated exhibition will be held at The Whitaker from Wednesday 14th September 2025 until Sunday 14th September 2026.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to collect a trail map and view The Whitaker Museum’s dedicated heritage display at Haslingden Library. More information can be found on The Whitaker’s website.
