October marks the latest focus in Rossendale Borough Council’s ‘Sport in the Valley’ campaign, with the spotlight on one of the most energetic and inclusive sports — squash.

Haslingden Squash Club based at the Adrenaline Centre is at the heart of the local squash community. The club welcomes players of all ages and abilities to pick up a racket, stay active, and enjoy the social and physical benefits of the game.

Although the current club was formally established in 2010, squash has been played at the Adrenaline Centre for more than 50 years, making Haslingden one of the area’s longest-standing sporting communities. The club offers sessions for beginners and experienced players alike, including ladies-only groups, a thriving junior section, and open nights where anyone can come along and get involved.

Club President Bernard Pickup, who has been part of the club for over five decades, said: “Squash has always been a welcoming and enjoyable sport that brings people together. Whether you’re completely new to the game or looking to return after a break, there’s a place for everyone here.”

The Sport in the Valley campaign is part of the Rossendale Physical Activity and Sport Strategy, a year-long initiative celebrating the clubs and community groups that keep Rossendale active. Each month highlights a different sport, from grassroots to competitive level, aiming to bring people together and encourage daily participation in physical activity.

Councillor Liz McInnes, Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “The sports club and community network are at the heart of the Valley, and they continually adapt to its changing environment. This campaign is about celebrating that resilience and encouraging even more people to get involved.”
