Plans for the redevelopment of Bacup Market have now been formally submitted for planning approval, marking an important step forward for the town.

The proposals set out a vision to transform the existing market into a vibrant, welcoming destination that supports enterprise, attracts visitors, and provides a flexible space for community use all year round.

The redesigned market will feature new permanent and covered stalls, improved facilities for traders and shoppers, enhanced public areas, and landscaping designed to create a more attractive and accessible environment. The scheme also includes space for pop-up events, food and drink offers, and cultural activity supporting the Bacup 2040’s vision, to have something to do well into the evening.

Councillor Nick Harris, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, said: “The submission of these plans is another really positive milestone for Bacup. We’ve listened to businesses and residents, and we want the new market to be a space that feels lively, welcoming, and reflective of Bacup’s character and community spirit. With the addition of the through route from Market Street and the supermarket, these proposals are about building something that works for the whole town now.”

Simon Dalley, Chair of the Bacup 2040 Board and local business owner, added: “This is a positive step forward for Bacup. The market has always been at the heart of the town and these plans will help it reopen and once again become the thriving economic engine the town deserves. The plans strike a good balance respecting Bacup’s heritage whilst creating something modern, distinctive, sustainable and flexible. It’s great to see local ideas shaping the future of the market and the town as a whole.”

The plans are now live on the Council’s planning portal, where residents, businesses, and interested parties can view the proposals in full and share their comments.

Subject to the outcome of the planning application, works will commence in Spring next year.
