Rawtenstall Market Operator

Rossendale Borough Council has set out its intentions to appoint Pioneer Market Group as the new operator for Rawtenstall Market

Rossendale Borough Council has set out its intentions to appoint Pioneer Market Group as the new operator for Rawtenstall Market, following a competitive tender process designed to support the market’s long‑term future and strengthen its role at the heart of the town centre.

Rawtenstall Market is currently operating from its temporary location on the town square while essential works continue. The market will return to its original home in Summer 2027, and Pioneer Market Group will lead its operations, trader offer, and events programme as part of the wider regeneration of the town.

Pioneer Market Group brings a strong track record in running vibrant, community‑focused markets across the UK. Known for championing independent traders, delivering high‑quality visitor experiences, and curating lively events programmes, they specialise in transforming markets into thriving social and economic hubs. Their approach blends traditional market values with modern expectations around food, retail, culture, and community activity.

As part of their plans for Rawtenstall, Pioneer Market Group will work closely with local businesses, residents, and the Council to ensure a variety of stalls, themed market days, family‑friendly activities, and seasonal events. Engagement with existing traders will begin immediately to ensure a smooth transition and a shared vision for the market’s future.

Nick Harris, Lead Member for Economic Development at Rossendale Borough Council, said: “Rawtenstall Market is an important part of our town’s identity, and appointing Pioneer Market Group marks a really positive step forward. Their experience, energy and commitment to supporting independent businesses aligns perfectly with our ambitions for the market’s long‑term future. This is a great example of the Council and the private sector working well together. As we look ahead to the market returning to its original site in 2027, this partnership will help us create a vibrant, welcoming space that residents, traders and visitors can be proud of.”

Lindsay Rawson, Market Officer at Rossendale Borough Council, added: “The market is such a loved part of Rawtenstall, and it’s been great to see work moving forward on its original site. I’m looking forward to working with Pioneer Market Group and their fresh ideas as we start planning the market’s return home and focusing on creating a market that continues to feel special to the community and sits alongside the vibrant boroughwide market offer.”

James Wrigley, Commercial Director at Pioneer Market Group said: “Having visited Rawtenstall many times over the past year, I have seen firsthand how much this market means to the town and its identity. Through my own friends, I understand its unique charm and the role it plays in the community. We are eager to begin working with the existing traders, as well as the towns makers, curators, and foodies who make the local economy thrive. Our goal is to further support independent businesses and create a destination that everyone can be proud of; we truly can’t wait to open the doors to the refurbished home in 2027.”
