Waterside Mill - Cllr Judith Driver

Early improvement work has taken place at Waterside Mill in Bacup as part of a Valley Heritage-led project to explore options for the long-term future of the site

The building, which has been unused for many years, has attracted growing local interest. Valley Heritage has been speaking with residents, volunteers and community groups to understand what the mill means to people and how it might be used in the future.

Rossendale Borough Council has provided some financial support towards the initial tidy-up and safety measures, including artwork, boarding up the front arch, hoarding at the rear of the building and clearing debris. This contribution forms a small part of the wider community-driven work being led by Valley Heritage.

Local volunteers have played a key role in improving the area. The 2nd Rossendale Scouts and Explorers have helped remove fly-tipping over recent weeks, supported by equipment from Bacup Pride and waste collection arranged by Rossendale Borough Council.

A temporary mural has also been installed to encourage conversation and invite people to share their memories, ideas, and hopes for the building.

On the 20th and 21st June, Valley Heritage held a public drop-in event at The Alliance in Bacup, giving residents the change to learn more about the project and contribute their thoughts. The sessions mark the start of ongoing community conversation, with no decisions made at this stage.

Councillor Judith Driver said: “We’re really pleased to have been able to offer some early support to Valley Heritage as they begin speaking with the community about their project. People clearly care about Waterside Mill, and these conversations are an important first step in understand what the building could mean for Bacup in the future.”
