I began my Mayoral year at the end of May, and it’s been a busy and rewarding start.
. I’ve had the opportunity to meet local people, support our fantastic community groups and celebrate the many achievements happening across the Valley.
As Mayor, I’m proud to be supporting my chosen charities, Rossendale Hospice, M3 Project and Rossendale & Pendle Mountain Rescue, helping to raise awareness and funds for the invaluable work they do in our community.
I’m looking forward to working with local residents, businesses and organisations to support these great causes over the coming year. Here’s a look at what I’ve been up to throughout June.
Monday 8th June 2026 – Supporting families and young people in Bacup
My first visit of June was to the Bacup Family Centre, where I was joined by my guest, Jackie Oakes.
It was a pleasure to meet the staff and volunteers who dedicate their time and kindness to make a difference for local families. Hearing about the incredible work taking place through projects such as The Station Youth Hub and the Empowered Project for Young Girls was truly inspiring. Seeing first-hand the opportunities these projects create for young people filled me with confidence for the future of our community.

Wednesday 10th June 2026 – Celebrating Rossendale's businesses and enjoying local talent
My Consort, Steve Duxbury, and I were delighted to attend the 2026 Rossendale Means Business Expo at The Ashcroft in Whitworth. I always enjoy meeting local business owners, and this event was a great reminder of the innovation and passion that exists right across the Valley.
It was interesting listening to people's stories and to see the pride they have in their businesses. Our local economy is built on hardworking people, and it was wonderful to celebrate their achievements.
Later that evening, we headed to the New Millennium Theatre to watch Rossendale Players' production of Inspector Drake and the Perfect Murder. We thoroughly enjoyed the performance, a funny whodunnit with a talented cast who had the audience laughing throughout. We are so fortunate to have such a vibrant arts and theatre scene here in Rossendale, and I look forward to seeing more like this throughout the year.

Thursday 11th June 2026 – Welcoming Lancashire's new Mayors
Steve and I attended the High Sheriff of Lancashire's Mayor's Welcome Event at Queen Street Mill in Burnley. It was lovely to meet fellow newly appointed Mayors from across Lancashire and share experiences as we all begin our civic year. Touring the historic mill was a fascinating experience, and the event reminded me how important it is for civic leaders to come together, support one another and celebrate the unique communities we each represent.

Saturday 13th & Thursday 18th June 2026 – Marking Refugee Week in Rossendale
As part of Refugee Week, I was privileged to attend two events organised by Rossendale Refugee Support Group.
At The Horse and Bamboo, Steve and I viewed Benyamin Hemmati's powerful photography exhibition, celebrating refugees who have chosen to build new lives here in Rossendale. The stories behind the images were moving and highlighted the strength, resilience and positive contributions of so many people within our community.
A few days later, Jackie Oakes and I attended a screening of Dreamers at The Whitaker. The film offered a powerful insight into the experiences of asylum seekers living in detention centres and gave everyone present plenty to reflect upon.
Both events reminded me how important compassion and understanding are, and how fortunate we are to live in such a welcoming and inclusive Valley.

Wednesday 17th June – Raising money for Rossendale Hospice
One of the highlights of the month was visiting Rossendale Hospice with Steve to present a cheque following my 10k run at the Great Manchester Run. I was absolutely delighted to have raised £1,237.50 for this incredible local charity.
Rossendale Hospice provides outstanding care and support to patients and their families during some of life's most difficult moments, and I am proud to be able to contribute, even in a small way, to the invaluable work they do. Thank you to everyone who supported and sponsored me, it really does make a difference.

Monday 22nd June – Remembering and recognising our Armed Forces
I began the week by attending the Armed Forces Flag Raising Ceremony at St Mary's Gardens in Rawtenstall. I was honoured to stand alongside Deputy Lieutenant Louise Cooper BEM, Rev Hameem, the Mayor of Whitworth, councillors, council officers, veterans and members of the public as we paid tribute to the people who have served, and continue to serve, for our country. Moments like these are a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces community, and it was a privilege to be part of the ceremony.

Friday 26th June – Celebrating young people's achievements
Steve and I were delighted to attend Belmont Secondary School's Awards Event at St Mary's Chambers. Meeting the students and their families and celebrating everything they have achieved was a real joy. Their hard work, determination and ambition shone through, and it was wonderful to see so many young people recognised for their efforts. I wish every one of them the very best as they take their next steps.
Sunday 28th June – A wonderful day at Bacup and Stacksteads Carnival
One of the most colourful events of the month had to be Bacup and Stacksteads Carnival. Alongside Patrick Marriott, I was delighted to lead the parade to Stubbylee Park. This year's "Teddy Bears' Picnic" theme brought so much creativity, laughter and community spirit, with fantastic costumes and decorated cars.
Judging the entries certainly wasn't an easy task, as the standard was incredibly high, but congratulations to 42nd Trinity Baptist and Fusion Dance and Fitness on being named this year's winners. Thank you to everyone who took part and to all the volunteers who made such a wonderful day possible.

Monday 29th June – Opening the refurbished Marl Pits Bridleway and Lancashire music gala
Steve and I were pleased to attend the official opening of the refurbished Marl Pits Bridleway. Thanks to funding from Pride in Place, Lancashire Environment Fund and British Horse Society, these improvements will help even more residents and visitors enjoy one of Rossendale's beautiful outdoor spaces. We are incredibly lucky to have such wonderful countryside on our doorstep, and it's fantastic to see investment that encourages people to get outdoors, stay active and appreciate our local environment.
Later that day, Steve and I attended the Lancashire Music Service Gala Concert at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. The Lancashire Music Service is the lead organisation for Lancashire Music Hub, which supports and inspires children and young people to begin and progress their musical journeys.
The concert was a delight, with so much talent on show, and it was a great privilege to be in such a wonderful venue. We were also delighted and very proud to see that Rossendale had not just one, but two schools performing in the choir. Many congratulations to the pupils of Helmshore Primary and Edenfield Primary.

Tuesday 30th June – Celebrating learning and success
I rounded off a very busy month by attending the East Lancashire Learning Group Students Awards Evening at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel. It was inspiring to see students recognised for their dedication and achievements. Every award represented hard work, perseverance and determination, and it was a privilege to celebrate alongside them.
Looking back on my first month as Mayor, I feel proud and grateful. Every visit has shown me the kindness, talent, resilience and community spirit that make Rossendale such a special place to call home. Whether meeting volunteers, supporting local charities, celebrating businesses, applauding young people or attending community events, I've been reminded time and again of what makes our Valley so unique.
This is only the beginning of my Mayoral year, and I can't wait to continue meeting more of the amazing people who make Rossendale such a wonderful place. Thank you to everyone who has given me such a warm welcome, I look forward to many more memorable visits and celebrations in the months ahead.
