Rossendale is set to celebrate its rich industrial, culture and community heritage as 10 sites across the borough take part in Heritage Open Days 2026, running from 11th-20th September
Coordinated locally by the Rossendale Heritage Network, and supported by Rossendale Borough Council, this year’s programme brings together museums, historic buildings, exhibitions and community events that shine a light on the stories, people and places that shape the Valley.
From the atmospheric looms of Helmshore Mills Textile Museum to the restored steam power of Grane Engineering Museum, and from Rawtenstall’s role in the Weaver’s Uprising to the fascinating story of the Whitworth Doctors.
Events include:
- Helmshore Mills Textile Museum – Meet characters from the mill’s past and discover everyday working life.
- Grane Engineering Museum – See the ongoing restoration of the 500hp steam engine and working looms.
- The Whitaker Museum & Art Gallery – A heritage talk exploring mid-20th-century mill life through archive magazines.
- Weaver’s Cottage – A bicentennial exhibition on Rawtenstall in the year of the Weaver’s uprising by Rossendale Civic Trust.
- Crawshawbooth Quaker Meeting House – Open access to this historic 18th-century meeting house and gardens.
- Bacup Museum – Discover the story of the Bacup Highwaymen.
- Valley Heritage at Alliance – Tours of the former bank building and updates on heritage projects.
- Whitworth Museum – Exhibition of the famous Whitworth Doctors.
- East Lancashire Railway – Heritage journeys through the Irwell Valley.

It’s a chance for people to step inside places they may have walked past for years, meet the volunteers who care for them, and reconnect with the stories that make our borough unique.”
