Custom and Self-Build Register
The Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 places a duty on local councils in England to keep a register of people who are interested in self build or custom build projects in their area. What are Self Build and Custom Build?
Self build projects are defined as those where someone directly organises the design and construction of their own home. This covers a wide range of projects including a traditional DIY self build home to projects where the self builder employs someone to build their home for them. Community-led projects can also be defined as self build.
Custom build homes are where you work with a developer as an individual or a group to help deliver your own home. The developer may help to find a plot, manage the construction and arrange the finance for your new home. This is more of a hands-off approach but your home will be tailored to match your individual requirements.
Registering Interest
If you would like to register your interest for a custom or self build plot, please complete a registration form. There are separate forms depending on whether you are applying as an individual household or as part of a bigger group. All forms, and further information, can be found here: Register Your Interest.
By signing up, you will help us find out more about the demand for custom and self build plots in Rossendale; where people would like their plot to be and the type of house that they would like to build. Registration does not however guarantee that a suitable plot will be identified, or become available.
Monitoring the Register and Planning Permissions
On 30 October 2023, there were 48 entries from individuals in the Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Register for Rossendale and no group entries. At that date, the Council had granted 27 planning permissions for 28 plots of land for self-build and custom housebuilding since the beginning of the monitoring. The total number of entries in this table adds up to 49, however because one individual asked to be removed during the third base period, the total number of people actually on the Register, as of 30 October 2023, is 48.
Please note that any interest for self-build submitted to other websites is not monitored by the Council, therefore we advise you to register your interest using one of the forms above.
