Vote matters

The electoral register is updated on the first working day of each month apart from October and November when the annual canvass is taking place.  It only takes a few minutes to register online at the Register to Vote website, please note you will need the date of birth and national insurance number for each person that needs to register.

If you are a Britixh citizen living or working overseas for more than 6 months a year you can register to vote as an overseas elector.  This entitles you to vote in UK parliamentary elections and referendums.  You can register online at the Register to Vote website.

Once you have registered to vote you will be allocated to a polling station.  About a month before each election you will be sent a polling card which will explain where your polling station is and what time it is open.

Postal voting

At any time you can also ask to vote by post.  This can be for a particular election, for a set period of time or for all future elections but you must be registered to vote first.

You can apply to vote by post online here.

Proxy Voting

If you can't get to your polling station you may appoint a proxy to go to the polling station to vote for you.  Anyone can appoint a proxy for one election.  If you are ill or disabled or if your work or study takes you away from home you may be able to appoint a permanent proxy. You can apply to vote by proxy online here.
