The role

We are currently looking to appoint a LGV Driver/Puller/Loader.  The role will involve supporting the collection of waste and recycling materials, including food waste within the Borough, as well as supporting the cleansing team with mechanical road sweeping as necessary. 

Qualifications

Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent

Category C Driving Licence or equivalent

Hold a valid Driver Qualification Card (DQC)

Hold a valid Digital Tacho Card

Duties and responsibilities

  • Lead, organise, and motivate your assigned team to ensure daily waste collection and related tasks are completed within working hours.
  • Take responsibility for and operate vehicles safely, complete daily checks, routine maintenance, report defects, and ensure legal compliance for waste transport and disposal.
  • Transport all waste to authorised waste sites, ensuring that approved weight limits and legal requirements are adhered to
  • Fulfil all assigned duties flexibly, including street sweeping, litter picking, fly-tip clearance, bin washing, gritting, snow and flood clearance, and carcass removal as directed and direct your team to undertake these duties
  • Complete and submit all necessary paperwork and electronic records (e.g., crew sheets, incident reports, in cab system such as Bartec) as appropriate during the course of the shift
  • Provide customer service to resolve or escalate public enquiries related to waste management.
  • Undertake the duties of a waste operative and assist the operations team when required in order to provide a safe and efficient waste collection service
  • Assist with on-the-job training of any new or temporary employee after their initial induction.
  • Act as a professional ambassador for the Council, including assisting and advising the public, reporting environmental issues, escalating as necessary
  • Act as a key holder for any operational depot as and when required.
  • Work evening/weekend overtime, Bank Holidays, or on-call shifts as required
  • Perform all duties in accordance with Health & Safety legislation, legal requirements, and relevant codes of practice
  • All duties will be carried out in the working conditions normally inherent in the job.
  • Duties may include any reasonable tasks within the grade and competence of the role.

Person Specification

  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and deliver services to the public
  • Experience operating vehicles for waste collection, recycling, or street sweeping (advantageous)
  • Experience of working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Strong literacy, numeracy, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Leadership qualities with a focus on meeting daily targets and getting tasks right first time.
  • Polite, professional, and customer-focused when dealing with the public
  • Able to identify and segregate different types of waste.
  • Competent in carrying out vehicle defect checks and interpreting maps
  • Confident using mobile devices such as tablets
  • Team player with the ability to work independently when required.
  • Flexible and willing to work across a range of operational activities.
  • Physically fit for a demanding role involving lifting, carrying, and extensive walking
  • Committed to personal and public Health & Safety responsibilities
  • Willing to work overtime during Bank Holidays and peak periods.
